Adobe’s Photoshop software, widely used by graphic designers and photographers, recently integrated a highly anticipated new feature: the automatic generation of images from a simple textual description. This update, available since Tuesday July 23, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create illustrations or photos on a blank page, simply by providing a few words of instruction.

Inspired by pioneering AIs like Midjourney, which has stood out since mid-2022 for its level of photorealism, this new Photoshop feature is based on Firefly, the AI developed internally by Adobe. To use it, you must be connected to the Internet and have downloaded the latest version of Photoshop, accessible by subscription from 12 euros per month. This basic subscription allows you to generate up to 100 images per month, while more expensive professional subscriptions offer the option to create 500 or 1,000 images monthly.

This image generation tool is not entirely new, as an experimental version was already available to a limited number of users since the end of April. In addition, a simplified version of Firefly had been introduced in Photoshop as early as May 2023, but it did not yet allow you to create images from scratch. It was limited to adding created elements to an existing image or enlarging a photo by reconstituting its borders. According to Adobe, the Firefly AI was trained on images in the public domain and the Adobe Stock image catalog.
